The History of Suspension Yoga™

Records exist of a 5000 year old text titles: “Kurunta Yoga” which references postures using suspended ropes.  Kurunta means “puppet” in Sanskrit. This text was later discovered by the late yoga master, BKS Iyengar via his guru, Sri T Krishnamacharya, and it inspired him to further develop this practice with props. The use of ropes is still being practiced at Iyengar schools of yoga today.

Inversion as a form of therapy also goes back to 400 BC when Hippocrates, the father of medicine, inverted his patients with ropes and pulleys to harness the healing powers of gravity.

Centuries later in the 1960s, Dr Robert Martin, a California osteopath, chiropractor, and medical doctor, introduced the “Gravity Guidance System,” the first compilation of scientific studies and findings on the benefits of inversion therapy.

Like its predecessors, Suspension Yoga’s™ primary function was and continues to be the development and maintenance of a healthy spine. However, through continuous use and exploration, more and more ways of applying this remarkable equipment are being discovered, almost on a daily basis. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of postures and exercises that can be performed on the Suspension Yoga™ Suspension Sling.

Suffice it to say that Suspension Yoga™ has become a hybrid practice that is no longer about yoga poses alone. It can be used as a prop to accelerate advancement of difficult yoga poses, as a portable gym for body-weight training, and as inversion equipment for spinal therapy and as an aerial sling for some inventive high flying fun!
